Alexandre Bain
LOIRE
Pouilly-Fumé, an appellation of Centre-Loire located on the right bank of the river, in the Nivernais, opposite Sancerre, too often lacks authenticity: Alexandre Bain made it his mission to bring some authenticity to the region, producing natural wines that transcribe the terroir and go further than simple varietal expressions of Sauvignon.
Established since 2007 in the territory of Tracy-sur-Loire, Alexandre Bain cultivates 11 ha of Sauvignon – also known locally as “blanc fumé”. A grape variety too often harvested at low maturity and vinified with exogenous yeasts selected by the industry, and thus responsible for wines with a supposedly "typical" vegetal taste. Alexandre Bain's approach is that of biodynamics, working the vines by horse in most plots, harvesting by hand at perfect ripeness, and vinification with indigenous yeasts and with no or low addition of sulphur. A range of natural whites which reflect the different nuances of the terroir – limestone and clay-limestone parcels – and go beyond the caricatural style of many Sauvignons. An approach sometimes misunderstood by the authorities of the appellation, hence certain cuvées are released as Vin de France, despite being authentic Pouilly wines...
