Azienda Cinque Campi
EMILIA
The wines of Emilia, on the right bank of the Po river, are regaining an almost forgotten prestige. Thanks to a handful of hardworking vignerons who favour authenticity over yields, the traditions of age-old viticultural terroirs - with their native grape varieties and styles of vinification - are undergoing something of a renaissance.
An old family of polycultural farmer-winemakers in Emilia, to the south of Reggio Emilia, the Nizzolis have always farmed their land organically, respecting the soil's natural balance. From the 2000s onwards, the estate began to specialise in viticulture, opting to bottle and sell their own wines for the first time. The parcels that make up the domain's 7 hectares - including the Cinque Campi parcel, which gave the domain its name - lie on clay-silt soils rich in silica and grow only native varietes, such as Spergola for the white wines and Malbo Gentile and Lambrusco Grasparossa for the reds. In both the vineyard and cellar, all work is done as naturally as possible, without chemicals and as little intervention as possible. Wines that are at once traditional, precise and full of character.
